Rockford’s Ongoing Efforts to Combat Domestic and Community Violence

Rockford has been actively addressing domestic and community violence through a series of strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts. Recognizing the profound impact of such violence on public safety and quality of life, the city has implemented comprehensive measures to support victims and prevent future incidents.

Establishment of the Mayor’s Office of Domestic and Community Violence Prevention

In 2017, Mayor Tom McNamara established the Mayor’s Office of Domestic and Community Violence Prevention. This office brings together various agencies and organizations to collectively tackle issues related to domestic violence and human trafficking. The office’s vision is to create a community free from all forms of violence and its detrimental impacts.

Formation of the Task Force

A key component of the office’s strategy is the formation of a Task Force comprising representatives from multiple community agencies. This Task Force is divided into three components: prevention, protection, and prosecution. Members include the 17th Judicial Circuit Court, Rockford Police Department, Family Peace Center, and several others. Their collective efforts focus on shaping policies and initiatives to effectively address violence in the community.

Community Initiatives and Support Groups

Among the initiatives developed by the Task Force is the VOICES Survivor Support Group. This committee consists of survivors of domestic violence who volunteer their time to advocate, educate, and empower others facing similar challenges. Their collective voice plays a crucial role in raising awareness and providing support within the community.

Family Peace Center

In 2020, Rockford opened the state’s first Family Peace Center, a facility dedicated to supporting victims of domestic and sexual violence. The center offers a range of services, including counseling, legal assistance, and advocacy, all under one roof. This holistic approach aims to streamline support for victims and facilitate their journey toward healing and justice.

Ongoing Challenges and Community Engagement

Despite these efforts, challenges persist. The city continues to grapple with issues such as homelessness resulting from domestic violence and the need for more comprehensive support systems. Community engagement remains a cornerstone of Rockford’s approach, with ongoing efforts to involve residents in prevention strategies and to foster a culture of zero tolerance toward violence.

Rockford’s commitment to combating domestic and community violence is evident in its multifaceted approach, combining policy initiatives, community collaboration, and dedicated support services. While progress has been made, the city acknowledges the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all its residents.
