Rockford is embarking on significant infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing the city’s transportation and water systems. These projects are part of a broader effort to modernize the city’s infrastructure and support future growth.
11th Street Reconstruction
The city has initiated a comprehensive reconstruction of 11th Street, a key corridor in Rockford. The $29.3 million project includes pavement reconstruction, new off-street multiuse paths, signal upgrades, pedestrian lighting, new water mains, and lead service line replacements. This phase of the project spans from Broadway to Charles Street. A subsequent phase, managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation, will address 11th Street from Harrison Avenue south past Sandy Hollow Road.
New Water Treatment Plant
In addition to roadway improvements, Rockford is investing in a new water treatment plant. This facility is considered crucial for the city’s development, ensuring a reliable and safe water supply for residents and businesses. The plant is part of the city’s record-breaking $385.3 million Capital Improvement Plan, which allocates funds for various infrastructure projects over the next five years.
Community Impact
These infrastructure projects are expected to have a positive impact on the community by improving transportation efficiency, enhancing public safety, and supporting economic development. Residents can look forward to smoother commutes, safer pedestrian pathways, and a more robust water system as these projects progress.
